Iona Stephen has been a staple on Sky as one of their main golf presenters for a number of years now, covering events on both the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour and major championships such as The Masters.

In a couple of months’ time she’ll be front and centre again as the broadcaster launches its coverage of The Open Championship at RoyalTroon.

In the run-up to then, her focus will be less on watching golfers hit greens and more on making sure she hits the right notes.

Stephen will take up the role as the host of a new show on Classic FM, covering traditional folk music.

The St Andrews native, who was an aspiring golfer herself before injuries derailed her pro career, has an extensive portfolio of media work including voiceover artistry and event presentation and also has her own YouTube channel, On the Road with Iona.

But this will be her first proper foray into the world of DJing on the radio.

Her show, Traditional Tunes with Iona, will run from 9pm until 10pm every Friday night for six weeks.

The programme will focus on how classical music has been inspired by Celtic music, with the presenter revealing she often listen to the genre whilst preparing for golf events, and used it to help her study.

Stephen will follow popular comic and chat show host Jonathan Ross on the station, with former singer and Loose Women panellist Mylene Klass on the next slot.

The final broadcast is on July 5 and that will ensure she is back in her happy place in time for The Open kicking off on Thursday, July 18.

Stephen will be part of the Sky Sports team that provide build up coverage ahead of the tournament, with practice rounds commencing on the Sunday before.

The broadcaster posted a clip of her introducing the show (which is pre-recorded) on her Instagram account.

She also said: “Who’s ready to take a journey with me?

“I am so excited to share the news that from tonight, and every Friday for the next six weeks, you can join me on Classic FM from 9-10pm as we explore classical music that has been inspired by Celtic music.

“We will travel across the British Isles, sharing stories, playing some absolute classics and tonight we start in Scotland!

“I come from a family of folk musicians and I’ve listened to Classic FM since I was a student at university and it has continued to be a daily feature in my life.

“It’s a channel that brings calm and relaxation whenever you need a dose. I studied to it, prepared for golf events with it, the puppies were even born with Classic FM on in the background!

“It has been there for some big moments in my journey and now I have the privilege of taking a shot in the seat where some of the greatest voices have and do sit.

“I’ll see you tonight at 9pm!”

She was given some well-wishes by fans and friends from within the entertainment industry.

Former football Jimmy Bullard, who now appears on the Golf Life YouTube channel and had Stephen on as a guest recently – in which she told a hilarious story about ending up with Tiger Woods’ trousers after a golf event – said: “There’s some class on classic.”

Fellow radio presenter Kirsty Gallacher, who is the daughter of former golfer Bernard Gallacher, said: “Yeah welcome to the @global family Iona!”
