I’m blessed to be a golfer’s child and I was really good when I was younger, but my dad does my head in on the course

HER dad made history as a golfer in the Ryder Cup, becoming the youngest player to represent Great Britain and then captaining Team Europe to an iconic victory 26 years later.

She followed in her dad’s footsteps at an early age and realised she had a talent for the sport as well.

But she ended up putting away the golf clubs after life ‘got in the way’ of the course and she later found her own fame as a presenter and broadcaster instead.

Kirsty Gallacher is the daughter of Scottish golf legend Bernard, who was as one of Europe‘s top golfers in the seventies and early eighties, winning ten times on the European Tour and playing in eight Ryder Cup tournaments.

Kirsty is one of three children, with sister Laura and brother Jamie, but she is the most well-known out of the three.

During her impressive years as a broadcaster, she has been the face of Sky Sports for over two decades and has appeared on several popular TV shows, including Gladiators, Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway,  Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Strictly Come Dancing.

The 48-year-old was born in Edinburgh on January 20, 1976 but the family moved to Virginia Water in Surrey when dad Bernard got the job as club pro at the prestigious Wentworth Club.

Gallacher Sr had a successful golfing career and reached new heights after Kirsty was born, winning seven European Tour events and two Scottish PGA Championship titles.

To Kirsty, being on the golf course has always felt like home.

Living at Wentworth Club was all she knew when she was younger as the family headed to Surrey when she was just 18 months old.

She enjoyed every moment of it and tried to emulate her father on the course.

Her love for playing the sport soon fizzled out when she reached high school, but her passion for the game has always been there – even to this day.

She joined the TUBES & ANGE GOLF LIFE Youtube channel for nine holes at a local course and opened up on her family life and playing the game herself.

Asked what it was like growing up at Wentworth, she said: “Being on a golf course is like being at home. It was a great life, dad toured a lot.

“He was Ryder Cup captain – that was stressful, but amazing as well.

“We grew up on the golf course and it was second nature really.

“I’m very blessed being a golfer’s child and being in a golfer’s family. I love golf. I don’t find it easy playing as much as I used to as it’s hard balancing everything with work, kids and life.

“I played for Wentworth as a junior and I was a really good player but you get into school life and things and life gets in the way a bit.”

Having captained the winning Ryder Cup team in 1995, Bernard announced his retirement from the game a year later.

He hasn’t played professional in almost three decades, but he still has the same competitive spirit.

And Kirsty has revealed it can be frustrating sharing the course with her dad because he constantly ‘bombards’ her with tweaks she should make to her swing.

Discussing her style, she said: “There are things my dad is always on at me (about).

“He bombards me with things, it’s like a checklist. My brain explodes.

“Sorry dad, but you do my head in.

“Playing golf with my dad, he gets stompy and walks off and I’m like ‘Are you alright?!'”

Asked if her dad still plays, she replied: “Yeah loads. He still plays everyday.”

Kirsty was approached by a Sky executive at a Ryder Cup dinner in 1996 and was given a job as a production assistant before moving to become an editorial assistant.

In 1998 she was offered the chance to present Sky SportsNews and she’s never looked back.

Soon came presenting gigs on Soccer AM, Simply The Best, Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway and she even had a run hosting her own show, Kirsty’s Home Videos, which was Sky’s version of You’ve Been Framed.

Since then there have also been stints on the radio with Smooth and on GB News.

Kirsty is also somewhat of a fitness fanatic, regularly posting videos and clips of her working out and in the gym on her social media and she has ran in the LondonMarathon.

She has two sons and in addition to her media work spends a lot of time campaigning for animal welfare.
