JUSTIN ROSE has opened up on his wife being labelled as the “mystery woman” after she embraced Rory McIlroy following his Masters win last Sunday.

Rose and wife Kate remained cool and classy as they congratulated McIlroy on completing his career Grand Slam despite the Northern Irishman having to beat Rose in a play-off to do so.

Kate caused a stir online with her emotional hug with McIlroy, being called the “mystery woman” until fans quickly realised that she was Rose’s wife.

And now Rose has said that he found the whole ordeal“funny” in an interview ahead of the RBC Heritage in South Carolina this week.

He said: “The ‘mystery woman.’ There was some article somewhere like ‘who’s the mystery woman that was hugging Rory, it turned out to be Kate. That was pretty funny.”

And Rose, who is close friends with McIlroy and played alongside him at the Ryder Cup, went on to explain that he didn’t even think Kate’s conversation with McIlroy was even worth asking her about – leaving that emotional moment between the pair.

He said: “Listen, I think in the moment you realise what it means to everybody involved.

“You realise what it means to other families, what they must be feeling. You’re a part of the moment, you’re a part of the story. You’re a part of all of the energy that’s going on in that moment.

“I think that’s what happens. You embrace that connection that you have with everybody and all that’s going on in the moment.

“No, I don’t know what she said to him. I don’t think that was discussion-worthy or anything, to be honest.”

Rose narrowly missed out on winning a Green Jacket with a THIRD 2nd place finish last weekend.

It’s the second time that the 44-year-old has fallen short of The Masters in a play-off, after suffering the same fate against Sergio Garcia in 2017.

Rose said he felt “tormented” after coming so close, but has also revealed that being in the mix is exactly why he keeps coming back.

He explained: “It’s the belief that I can still have these special moments in the game.

“I think that little things like holing the putt on the Friday at the Ryder Cup with all the team around me, that’s a moment I’ll remember. It’s a special moment.

“Even the Open Championship was special, walking down 18 and being right in it.

“Holing a putt at Augusta on 18 on Sunday and seeing the crowd stand up, those are special moments.

“Look, I want it to be accompanied with the requisite trophy as well, don’t get me wrong, but the reason I’m playing is to feel those moments that really matter in your career and in your life.”
